Sam Hubbard’s Legendary Career: An Exclusive Interview With Connor White ‘27

Sam Hubbard with his brother, Jake, and their mom at Bengals Training Camp

Our very own, Connor White ’27, received the chance of a lifetime to interview former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end, Sam Hubbard. Sam is the brother of St. Rita English teacher, Jake Hubbard.

Starting his career off at Ohio State University, Sam Hubbard has played a huge role for the Bengals and the Buckeyes. He made big plays on the defensive side of the ball, making tackles, forcing fumbles, and even having an interception.

Sam Hubbard came out of Ohio State being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 3rd Round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He had 17 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, and 1 interception for the Ohio State Buckeyes. One of his biggest highlights from college was when he tackled Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley at the same time for a big loss. He did a lot for the Ohio State Buckeyes and helped them get to the playoffs multiple times.

Sam Hubbard played for the Cincinnati Bengals and was one of the team captains. He’s been a captain for 4 years in a row. He’s recorded 38.5 sacks, 236 solo tackles, and 6 forced fumbles with 1 interception in his career. One of his best highlights was when he played the Ravens in the 2022 Wild Card game in the 2022-23 season. The Ravens were on the 2-yard line and did a tush push when the quarterback, however, fumbled and Sam recovered. He then ran it back for a 98-yard touchdown, which was the longest in NFL playoff history. He helped them get to the AFC Championship and have lots of success in the playoffs.

This reporter was able to speak to Sam about some of his accomplishments on the football field:

Connor White: “What is your favorite NFL career moment?”

Sam Hubbard: “My favorite moment in the NFL was the Ravens touchdown in the 2022 Wild Card game or the sack on Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in the 2021 AFC Championship game.”

Connor White: “How did it feel after the Ravens touchdown and being written in the history books?”

Sam Hubbard: “At first it didn’t really sink in, I didn’t really think about it that much. I then realized what really happened when Head Coach Zac Taylor told me that this was the longest fumble recovery in playoff history.”

This week, Sam announced his retirement from the NFL after a 7-year career with the Bengals. Sam Hubbard’s career from a college standout to an NFL star has turned him into a dominant defensive force on the football field that will be remembered for years to come.
