St. Rita Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, our Spanish classes and Spanish Club put together many vibrant activities, to share with our St. Rita Family about the cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking countries.

The festivities began with our Spanish classes learning about influential figures who have shaped Hispanic culture and history. A few notable figures included civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, singer Selena Quintanilla, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor, baseball player Roberto Clemente, painter Frida Kahlo, and astronaut Ellen Ochoa. Our Ritamen researched these famous people and created informative banners showcasing their accomplishments. These banners are proudly displayed on the second floor of the school, providing our St. Rita Family the opportunity to read and learn more about them.

The Spanish Club played a game of Lotería, a traditional Mexican game similar to bingo, to commemorate Mexican Independence Day. They also worked together to transform the second-floor stairwell with colorful decorations and a poster featuring when Spanish-speaking countries received their independence from Spain. Finally, they created a playlist of songs by various Spanish-speaking musicians to be played during passing periods throughout the school day.

As Hispanic Heritage Month wraps up, the Spanish Club and the Foreign Language Department were proud to make this a fun educational experience that brings our St. Rita Family closer to the rich cultural history of the Hispanic world.
