St. Rita of Cascia High School bestows the “Mustang of the Month” award every month during the academic year to notable students from each class. Faculty and staff nominate students based on the student’s overall achievements and involvement at the school. The award winners are then selected from those nominated by an award committee. The following students were selected the December 2009 Mustangs of the Month:

Freshman Jack Gardner (Palos South Middle School): Jack continues to volunteer his services at his middle school, Palos South. At St. Rita, Jack is a member of the concert, marching, and jazz bands. He was the starting goalie of the freshman soccer team and is looking forward to the start of spring sports, especially water polo and baseball. According to his teachers, Jack is a hard worker in the classroom who constantly participates, adds to class discussions, and has contributed greatly to the JV Scholastic Bowl team’s early season success. In Jack’s spare time he performed in Mother McAuley’s theatre production of Oklahoma.

Jack said of his experience thus far during his first year, “I love St. Rita because of the family atmosphere. I feel more at home here than anywhere I have ever been.”

Sophomore Jacob Golding (Palos South Middle School): Since arriving at St. Rita his activities include being involved in indoor and outdoor track and as a member of the football team. During his sophomore year he was brought up to play with the varsity football team during playoffs. In the summer Jacob volunteers for a week in Harlan as part of a church mission trip. According to his teachers, Jacob is an excellent student earning a 4.0 GPA.

Jacob spoke of his experiences at St. Rita, “I came to St. Rita not knowing what to expect. Getting up early everyday is hard; but, I can honestly say that coming here has been a joy and I know it will be a blast in the future.”

Junior Sean Moroney (Keller): Sean volunteers at his grammar school Keller in Keller’s Gifted Center, as well as helps in the school office and assists their custodians. While at St. Rita he has been in the Knights of Augustine, a member of the track team during his sophomore year, and this past year was a member of St. Rita’s football team. This year, Sean is also working toward becoming a member of the National Honor Society.

Sean said, “The past years at St. Rita have been great. I met many new people and I’ve gotten involved in many things. Choosing St. Rita was the best decision I’ve made thus far.”

Senior Kevin Handler (Queen of Martyrs): Kevin currently holds a 4.3 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has also been very involved throughout his years at St. Rita in the Knights of Augustine and is current the organizations co-President. This past summer, Kevin took part in St. Rita’s first-ever service trip that traveled to Lawrence, Massachusetts. Athletically, he played soccer during his sophomore year and volleyball during his freshman and sophomore years. Recently, Kevin was also a Kairos retreat leader. In his spare time, Kevin referees basketball games at Queen of Martyrs.

Kevin said, “My decision to come to St. Rita was the best I have ever made. I have a second home and a much larger family. I will be forever thankful for choosing Rita.”

The Mustangs of the Month awards were presented at an all-school mass on January 8th. Each student was presented with a personally engraved Mustang statue.
