Winners Announced in St. Rita’s Jasica Art Scholarship Competition
For Immediate Release January 13, 2010
St. Rita of Cascia High School recently announced the winners of the 3rd Annual Joseph J. Jasica Art Scholarship. The program was founded by St. Rita alumni Mr. Raymond Jasica ’55 and Mr. Robert Jascia ’57, in memory of their brother, Joseph, who was a 1952 graduate, now deceased. “Joseph was always a lover of art,” said Raymond, “and I wanted to do something that would honor that memory as well as benefit the current Rita students.” Each winner was awarded a $500 grant that goes toward the current school year’s tuition.

St. Rita of Cascia High School recently announced the winners of the 3rd Annual Joseph J. Jasica Art Scholarship. The three students that were chosen as scholarship winners stand with their works of art. They were (left to right) freshman Nick Henrichs (St. Gerald), sophomore Max Esterhammer-Fic (Clissold), and junior Sean McCormick (St. Bede the Venerable). They were joined by Mr. Raymond Jasica ’55, his wife Jeanine, and Mrs. Karen Omastiak.
The Joseph J. Jasica Art Scholarship Competition encourages students in art classes as well as the entire student body to create a piece of art. There were five entries this year, covering a range of interpretations of the Augustinian message. While all demonstrated the talents and perspective of the artists, the three that were chosen as scholarship winners were submitted by freshman Nick Henrichs (St. Gerald), sophomore Max Esterhammer-Fic (Clissold), and junior Sean McCormick (St. Bede the Venerable).
Henrichs drawing portrays Our Mother of Good Counsel. “I chose to draw Our Mother of Good Counsel because she has a lot to do with St. Rita. In spirit she is here by all our sides keeping us from harm and giving us wisdom and right-judgment through our days at St. Rita,” said Henrichs. McCormick’s work completed in pencil, titled Vox Clamantis in Deserto, portrays an angel statue in front of trees and grassy hills. Esterhammer-Fic completed a painting that depicted a close-up flower with a bee.
The judges – Mr. Raymond Jasica, his wife Jeanine, and Mrs. Karen Omastiak, daughter of Joseph and mother to Ritamen Mark ’08 and Brian ’11 (St. Bede the Venerable) – were highly impressed by these submissions. The winners were announced at an all-school Mass on January 8th and the awards presented by St. Rita Principal Mrs. Sally Deenihan, President Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. ’83, art teacher Mrs. Robyn Kurnat, and scholarship coordinator Ms. Martha Dion. The other two nominees – were presented with a commemorative glass keepsake. Those students were freshman Austin Kingsley (Christ the King) and sophomore Sean Esposito (Fierke).
Congratulations to the winners and all who participated, and special thanks to the Jasica family for giving back to the fine arts program and students at St. Rita while keeping the memory of Joseph alive.
