Former St. Rita Wrestling Coach Dan Carroll Named to IHSA Coaches Hall of Fame

This past week it was announced that St. Rita of Cascia High School’s former Head Wrestling Coach Dan Carroll was named to the IHSA Coaches Hall of Fame.
Dan Carroll completed his 18th year as a head wrestling coach in the prestigious Chicago Catholic League in 2008. He began his career at Archbishop Weber High School in 1990. In seven years at Weber, Carroll coached two individual State Champions and four State place winners as well as achieved a team regional title in 1997. He was voted the TonyLawless Award (CCL Coach of the Year) in 1996.
In 1997, he moved to St. Rita of Cascia High School. Coach Carroll was the Head Coach of the Mustang Wrestlers for 11 seasons before he retired from coaching wrestling in 2008. When Coach Carroll began his tenure at St. Rita, the Mustangs were a last place conference team. In four years time however, Coach Carroll turned the Mustangs into a Conference and State Championship team.
St. Rita of Cascia High School’s former Head Wresting Coach Dan Carroll was named to the IHSA Coaches Hall of Fame.
St. Rita won back-to-back class AA State titles in 2003 and 2004, and had a State runner-up finish in 2006. His teams finished third in State in 2005 and 2007, and were State Quarter finalists in 2001 and 2008. Coach Carroll’s career dual meet record is 324-96-1. He has the most wins of any St. Rita wrestling coach in St. Rita’s Wrestling Program history. He has coached over 80 State qualifiers, 44 State place winners (40 at St. Rita), including 12 State Champions (10 at St. Rita). The St. Rita Mustangs were also CCL Champions under Coach Carroll in 2003, 2004, and 2006. He received the Tony Lawless Award three times while at St. Rita. He was named Illinois Coach of the Year in 2003.
In addition to his IHSA coaching experience, he volunteered for ten years helping out at tables at tournaments and coaching Cadet and Junior National teams. He is currently active as both at teacher and coach at St. Rita of Cascia High School.
Wrestlers led by Coach Carroll have gone on to complete in some of the most prestigious college wrestling programs, such as those at: Iowa State University, Michigan State University, Oklahoma State University, the United States Naval Academy, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Coach Carroll will be officially inducted into the IHSA Coaches Hall of Fame during the IHSA’s State Wrestling Tournament in March. He currently resides on the St. Rita faculty as a physical education teacher and is the head bowling coach and assistant coach for golf and lacrosse.
