Mustangs Fall in State Championship

For Immediate Release June 15, 2009

The St. Rita Varsity Mustangs started the season with high expectations, and did almost everything they needed to win a state championship. They played aggressively and left it all on the field, but it was not meant to be as a young New Trier team pulled off a 4-3 upset at Silver Cross Field in Joliet on June 13.

The game looked to be an offensive outburst at first, with two runs pushed across by the Mustangs in the first. But once New Trier grabbed the lead, it was their closing pitching and flawless defense that solidified their championship.

The Mustangs have to be congratulated for their outstanding season, which was a long journey from taking raw talent and creating the feeling of a unified team. Congratulations to all the graduated seniors who have given everything they had for four years, and congratulations to Mike Zunica and the coaching staff.
