Welcome to The Mustang Give! This is an opportunity for every member of the St. Rita family to realize that they can make a difference in the lives of young men. That the Future Is Created By All! Remember, every gift counts as we strive to bring in $10,000 from The Mustang Give between May 15 and June 15. Below are four different areas that you can direct your support to with your gift. Each of these areas represents the diversity of the St. Rita Experience that our young men are able to take advantage of each day. These four programs in some way make sure that our young men received the well-rounded education they need to succeed at the next level.

Villanova Academic Study Center

St. Augustine believed that we should meet students where they are at, and bring them to where they need to be. The Villanova Academic Study Center at St. Rita does just that as it is designed to provide the additional attention that some young men need through tutoring and small group work. In this program, in addition to the tutoring they receive, Freshmen take a double period of Algebra their first year to set the foundation for success in future math classes as well as a class on organizational skills and critical thinking. A gift designated for this area will help provide the materials needed to assist these students in setting a strong foundation for a successful career at St. Rita.

Tennis Program
Yes – St. Rita has a Tennis Team! This year a group of students led by some seniors persuaded the administration to begin a tennis team. So far it has gone extremely well. This inaugural season the team consists of 14 members representing each grade level, and is led by their coach Mr. Dan Madden. Though this sport was not budgeted for, the school felt it was an opportunity to provide more young men with the chance to participate in an extracurricular activity.

A gift designated for this area will help offset the costs of court rental, league fees, uniforms, and transportation. It will also help to insure that the tennis team will be back for another successful season next year!

Emergency Tuition Assistance
Each year there are some St. Rita families that suffer through a financial hardship due to loss of job or illness. It seems that this year there has been many more than normal. As it is the belief of Fr. Tom and the St. Rita administration to not lose any current students due to financial hardship we work very hard to provide these families with the assistance they need – even though our budget amount of Tuition Assistance has been used.
A gift designated for Tuition Assistance will go directly to help one of our current families get through a difficult time. Your gift, regardless of size, will help make sure that one of our young men is able to continue at St. Rita High School!

General Assistance
Many people want to give and have the desire to assist with the entire mission. Thank you! You can assist with making sure that the St. Rita mission of excellence continues by designating your gift for General Assistance. This will allow us to use your gift for areas such as Teachers’ salaries, the Kairos Retreat program, general repairs to our 50 year old campus, and general academic support.

Regardless of which area you choose to make your gift, please know that you will make a difference! Because, the Future Is Created By All!

Student Stories

As we ask you to Give Back to St. Rita High School, we want to highlight certain students currently enrolled at St. Rita that have made a profound impact in the hallways, classrooms, athletic fields and community in general.

They rely on the financial assistance provided by the St. Rita High School Family. Without our generous alumni and friends, these students would not be enriching our daily lives and making such significant contributions to our school.

Every gift—regardless of size—will make a difference. If you are an alumnus, you were once helped by the alumni that came before you…you just never realized it.

It’s your turn to Give Back.

A story about a St. Rita senior

One of our seniors is a young man who always wears a bright smile on his face and doesn’t seem to know that school gets “dismissed” at 2:20—he is in the building doing some activity/club/sport until dinnertime on most nights.

This senior will enroll next fall for college after being active in student government for four years, serving as an Alter Server for the St. Rita Novena, and being a member of several athletic teams and clubs.

This senior is the beneficiary of financial aid from our donors and alumni. Taking him out of the hallways would leave a giant hole in our school that would be very difficult to fill.

This past Christmas season, unbeknownst to him, this senior was helped tremendously by St. Rita’s Christmas Giving Tree Program. If you’re not familiar with it, it is a student-led campaign designed to raise money to purchase Christmas items for less-fortunate families who struggle to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

It’s a moving experience when our families are able to get a little assistance from members of the St. Rita community. The Mustang Give is another opportunity to help this young man and his peers.

The St. Rita High School Family is proud of the recent success of Drew McGowan, a 2008 alumnus, and soon-to-be graduate of Cornell University. Drew is an Evergreen Park native.

Drew is a wonderful example of a true “Ritaman,” someone who works hard to excel in all areas of life, be it the classrooms, athletic fields, or the community around him.

While at St. Rita, Drew was involved in many areas of the school, and was an All-Catholic League football selection in his senior year. While playing for the Mustangs as a junior, Drew helped guide St. Rita to a Class 7A state championship. But his accomplishments in the classrooms were even greater, and the hard work and dedication to his studies led Drew to enroll at Cornell University of the Ivy League.

Drew played football all four years, lettering two years as an offensive tackle and guard for the Big Red. He started six games as a junior before starting every game his senior year. Drew’s senior leadership enabled the Big Red to improve to a 5-5 record, after posting just four wins combined in the team’s two previous campaigns.

The skills that Drew learned at St. Rita High School allowed for him to have success at Cornell and easily adapt to the rigors of life as a student-athlete at an Ivy League School.

“Time management was one of the things I needed while at Cornell, and I definitely feel I was prepared from my teachers at St. Rita,” McGowan said.

The college life differs greatly from life as a high school student, but the “open-door” policy instituted by St. Rita teachers gave McGowan the confidence to seek out his professors at Cornell and continue to ask questions and seek help, if needed.

“Having that open-door policy at Rita made me feel at ease when I first stepped on campus at Cornell,” McGowan recently remarked. “I had a great experience with so many teachers in high school, and what I learned from their classes really helped me succeed in the Ivy League.”

After McGowan successfully completes his graduation this May from the Ithaca, New York, campus, he’ll accept a job as a Sales and Trading Analyst with Performance Trust Capital Partners in Chicago. We are proud of Drew for being able to land a great job so soon after graduation.

About St. Rita High School, Drew stressed the importance of getting involved.

“You need to get involved as much as you can at St. Rita. It prepares you for college because you learn great time-management skills, among other things.”

Drew comes from a long line of McGowan family members, all with deep roots in the St. Rita Family.

His grandfather, Jack, is an honorary alumnus, while his father, John, is a graduate from the class of 1978. Drew’s uncles, Steve (1981), and Mark (1984), are joined by Drew’s brother, Ryan, a 2011 alumnus. Drew has had numerous cousins walk the halls of St. Rita as well, including Steve (2007) and Jake (2013). The St. Rita connection goes so deep that even Drew’s aunt, Denise McGowan-Rudolph, was a St. Rita cheerleader back in the day.

The family established the Dolores McGowan Scholarship Fund to help aid current Ritamen and their families—a scholarship named in honor of Drew’s grandmother, Dolores. Like many other families in the St. Rita community, the McGowan’s are an amazing collection of people.

Good luck, Drew, on the next challenging chapters of your life, and congratulations so far on all your accomplishments. The St. Rita High School Family is very proud of you!

Ciciora for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom.

Student members of NSHSS have the opportunity to nominate the educator who made the most significant contribution to their academic career. The Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award recognizes teacher role models who have made a lasting difference in their classroom by encouraging students to strive for excellence.

“Dedicated educators who exhibit a commitment to excellence deserve our highest praise and appreciation,” said NSHSS President James Lewis. “We’re excited to provide an ongoing means to do so, and we encourage our members to nominate teachers who have contributed to their academic success.”

On May 3, 2012, St. Rita Athletic Director and Varsity Head Baseball Coach, Mike Zunica was joined by family, friends and colleagues at the 52nd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet of the Chicago Catholic League. Zunica was one of fifteen men honored by the Chicago Catholic League Coaches Association for their contributions to academic and athletic excellence within Chicago Catholic high school athletics

Coach Mike Zunica is currently entering his 16th season as Varsity Head Baseball Coach at St. Rita High School. He has amassed an overall record of 440 – 141. During his tenure, he has lead the Mustangs to 9 regional championships, 4 sectional championships, 4 super-sectional championships, and 9 Elite 8 appearances, including summer state championships in 2005 and 2009, and a 2nd place finish in both the spring of 2009 and 2010.

In addition to their success on the field, the St. Rita Mustangs Baseball team is proud of their comparable achievements in the classroom. This year’s Varsity Mustangs have 17 student members of the National Honor Society. During Mike’s tenure as head baseball coach, he has witnessed four members of his team earn the distinction of Class Valedictorian. Overall, 143 St. Rita Mustang baseball players were named to the National Honor Society and 127 players went on to compete in collegiate athletics – 26 of whom are currently competing at the collegiate level. St. Rita principal, Brendan Conroy said, “We are fortunate to have a baseball coach and athletic director like Mike, whose passion for St. Rita and commitment to the growth and improvement of his athletes and all our students is truly an inspiration.”

“I believe the greatest gift you can give your kid is a Catholic education,” said Zunica, who gave special thanks to his parents for the sacrifices they made to send him to Catholic schools. Zunica’s wife, Jacqui and three children, Camille, Michael and Mateo were also present at the induction ceremony. During the past four years, Zunica had the opportunity to coach his son, Mike, who will be graduating from St. Rita this month and entering Columbia University in New York to play football in the fall.

Darius Fleming told himself not to stress, but R.E.M. cycles and family wouldn’t allow it. First came the dream that he’d been drafted, which felt real enough until the former St. Rita and Notre Dame linebacker woke up from it Saturday, with no hope of returning to sleep.

So he worked out. He got a massage and some treatment. But then he couldn’t go golfing. Thus he sat watching the NFL Draft with his grandmother, and picks trolled by without his name ever appearing, and people kept you know, TALKING to him.

The record includes a victory over archrival Marist on April 17. The Crusaders are a solid 5-2 in the Catholic League Blue entering Monday’s game against Mount Carmel. Mighty impressive. While you and I might be surprised, McCarthy isn’t. “I expected success,” McCarthy said. “I honestly expected to be about 18-3 at this point.” McCarthy wasn’t laughing when he said that. That is one of the reasons he was the perfect choice to accelerate the Crusaders’ turnaround.

Even if he is a St. Rita graduate.
