The Mustang Give

Welcome to The Mustang Give!  This is an opportunity for every member of the St. Rita family to realize that they can make a difference in the lives of young men.  That the Future Is Created By All! Remember, every gift counts as we strive to bring in $10,000 from The Mustang Give between May 15 and June 15.   Below are four different areas that you can direct your support to with your gift.  Each of these areas represents the diversity of the St. Rita Experience that our young men are able to take advantage of each day.  These four programs in some way make sure that our young men received the well-rounded education they need to succeed at the next level.

Villanova Academic Study Center
St. Augustine believed that we should meet students where they are at, and bring them to where they need to be.  The Villanova Academic Study Center at St. Rita  does just that as it is designed to provide the additional attention that some young men need through tutoring and small group work.  In this program, in addition to the tutoring they receive, Freshmen take a double period of Algebra their first year to set the foundation for success in future math classes as well as a class on organizational skills and critical thinkingA gift designated for this area will help provide the materials needed to assist these students in setting a strong foundation for a successful career at St. Rita.

Tennis Program
Yes – St. Rita has a Tennis Team!  This year a group of students led by some seniors persuaded the administration to begin a tennis team.  So far it has gone extremely well.  This inaugural season the team consists of 14 members representing each grade level, and is led by their coach Mr. Dan Madden. Though this sport was not budgeted for, the school felt it was an opportunity to provide more young men with the chance to participate in an extracurricular activity.

A gift designated for this area will help offset the costs of court rental, league fees, uniforms, and transportation.  It will also help to insure that the tennis team will be back for another successful season next year!

Emergency Tuition Assistance
Each year there are some St. Rita families that suffer through a financial hardship due to loss of job or illness. It seems that this year there has been many more than normal.  As it is the belief of Fr. Tom and the St. Rita administration to not lose any current students due to financial hardship we work very hard to provide these families with the assistance they need – even though our budget amount of Tuition Assistance has been used.
A gift designated  for Tuition Assistance will go directly to help one of our current families get through a difficult time.  Your gift, regardless of size, will help make sure that one of our young men is able to continue at St. Rita High School!

General Assistance
Many people want to give and have the desire to assist with the entire mission.  Thank you!  You can assist with making sure that the St. Rita mission of excellence continues by designating your gift for General Assistance.  This will allow us to use your gift for areas such as Teachers’ salaries, the Kairos Retreat program, general repairs to our 50 year old campus, and general academic support.

Regardless of which area you choose to make your gift, please know that you will make a difference! Because, the Future Is Created By All!

Student Stories

As we ask you to Give Back to St. Rita High School, we want to highlight certain students currently enrolled at St. Rita that have made a profound impact in the hallways, classrooms, athletic fields and community in general.

They rely on the financial assistance provided by the St. Rita High School Family.  Without our generous alumni and friends, these students would not be enriching our daily lives and making such significant contributions to our school.

Every gift—regardless of size—will make a difference.  If you are an alumnus, you were once helped by the alumni that came before you…you just never realized it.

It’s your turn to Give Back.

A story about a St. Rita senior

One of our seniors is a young man who always wears a bright smile on his face and doesn’t seem to know that school gets “dismissed” at 2:20—he is in the building doing some activity/club/sport until dinnertime on most nights.

This senior will enroll next fall for college after being active in student government for four years, serving as an Alter Server for the St. Rita Novena, and being a member of several athletic teams and clubs.

This senior is the beneficiary of financial aid from our donors and alumni.  Taking him out of the hallways would leave a giant hole in our school that would be very difficult to fill.

This past Christmas season, unbeknownst to him, this senior was helped tremendously by St. Rita’s Christmas Giving Tree Program.  If you’re not familiar with it, it is a student-led campaign designed to raise money to purchase Christmas items for less-fortunate families who struggle to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

It’s a moving experience when our families are able to get a little assistance from members of the St. Rita community.  The Mustang Give is another opportunity to help this young man and his peers.

St. Rita Athletic Director Mike Zunica Inducted into the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame

On May 3, 2012, St. Rita Athletic Director and Varsity Head Baseball Coach, Mike Zunica was joined by family, friends and colleagues at the 52nd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet of the Chicago Catholic League. Zunica was one of fifteen men honored by the Chicago Catholic League Coaches Association for their contributions to academic and athletic excellence within Chicago Catholic high school athletics

Coach Mike Zunica is currently entering his 16th season as Varsity Head Baseball Coach at St. Rita High School. He has amassed an overall record of 440 – 141. During his tenure, he has lead the Mustangs to 9 regional championships, 4 sectional championships, 4 super-sectional championships, and 9 Elite 8 appearances, including summer state championships in 2005 and 2009, and a 2nd place finish in both the spring of 2009 and 2010.

In addition to their success on the field, the St. Rita Mustangs Baseball team is proud of their comparable achievements in the classroom. This year’s Varsity Mustangs have 17 student members of the National Honor Society. During Mike’s tenure as head baseball coach, he has witnessed four members of his team earn the distinction of Class Valedictorian. Overall, 143 St. Rita Mustang baseball players were named to the National Honor Society and 127 players went on to compete in collegiate athletics – 26 of whom are currently competing at the collegiate level.  St. Rita principal, Brendan Conroy said, “We are fortunate to have a baseball coach and athletic director like Mike, whose passion for St. Rita and commitment to the growth and improvement of his athletes and all our students is truly an inspiration.”

“I believe the greatest gift you can give your kid is a Catholic education,” said Zunica, who gave special thanks to his parents for the sacrifices they made to send him to Catholic schools. Zunica’s wife, Jacqui and three children, Camille, Michael and Mateo were also present at the induction ceremony. During the past four years, Zunica had the opportunity to coach his son, Mike, who will be graduating from St. Rita this month and entering Columbia University in New York to play football in the fall.

St. Rita Students Spend Easter Break in Rome, Cascia & Paris

After flying through the night to Paris on Good Friday, 23 St. Rita students of French and Latin, accompanied by two faculty members and three parents, embarked on a Spring tour of Paris, Cascia and Rome. While in Paris, the students enjoyed a cruise on the Seine River, admired the view of Paris from the third floor of the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and the Arc de Triomphe, discovered famous works of art at the Louvre and Musée D’Orsay as well as visited the magnificent Cathedral of Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle. The students also biked through the gardens of Versailles before visiting the palace of Versailles. On Easter Sunday, Mass was celebrated at St.Augustine’s Cathedral. Throughout their stay in Paris, the French and Latin students learned to travel around the city by the metro as Parisians do and enjoyed eating French specialties such as escargots and street vendor crêpes!

After an overnight train ride from France to Italy, the Ritamen arrived in Cascia, where they experienced the tranquility of the lovely town nestled in the Italian mountainside after having visited the beautiful and peaceful St. Rita Monastery and the St. Rita Sanctuary.

Upon arrival in Rome, the group headed to the Colosseum and the Foro Romano before wandering through the main streets and squares of Rome to take in the Piazza Navona, il Pantheon, Piazzadi Spagna, Campo de Fiori. The French and Latin students finished the trip of a lifetime by touring the Vatican, including the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.
Luckily, many students had packed an umbrella for the journey. Despite the rainy weather, everyone maintained a sunny disposition while savoring some pizza and famous Italian gelato.

The French and Latin students as well as their chaperones were, of course, sure to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure their return to Roma!

Congratulations Mustangs!

Chicago Tribune: Boys hockey state final | Sojka, Faron lead St. Rita past St. Viator

By Paul LaTour Special to the Tribune9:47 p.m. CDT, March 23, 2012

A broken wrist that required surgery during the summer subsequently resulted in a staph infection for St. Rita senior Stan Sojka.

It nearly derailed his hockey season.

Fortunately for the Mustangs, Sojka completed his final season Friday with a two-goal, one-assist performance in a 5-0 victory against St. Ignatius in the Illinois High School Hockey Championships boys final at the United Center.

“I spent a week straight in the hospital and lost 13 pounds, but I came back strong,” said Sojka, who missed 34 games this season and entered the final with eight goals. “I was told there wouldn’t be any complications regarding the wrist, so that kept my hopes up.”

Marty Napleton stopped 29 shots and Rick Faron scored twice for the Mustangs (46-13-4), who won their second title in three years and third overall. Sojka was one of six current Mustangs who played in the 2010 title game.

Southtown Star | Boys Hockey: Marty Napleton stymies St Viator, lifts St Rita to title

By:  Pat Disabato Updated: March 23, 2012 9:45Pm

St. Rita goalie Marty Napleton has been marvelous all season — a 31-8-2 mark, including 13 shutouts, and 1.45 goals-against average is testament to that.

Napleton, however, saved arguably his finest performance of the campaign for Friday night.

The junior netminder turned aside 28 shots, many in spectacular fashion, to carry St. Rita to a dominant 5-0 victory over St. Viator in the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois’ state championship at the United Center. Napleton earned Most Valuable Player honors for his performance.  Read Full Story

St. Rita French Club Visits Alliance Francaise

The St. Rita French Club has had an exciting and eventful year.  They attended a performance of Cyrano at the House Theatre, dined at La Sardine, attended a performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and hosted Christmas and Mardi Gras celebrations. On March 7th, the French Club visited the Alliance Francaise, Chicago’s French cultural language and learning center.  The French Club members partook in a French cooking class conducted in French and then enjoyed the fine meal that they prepared.  They then enjoyed watching several prize winning French short films in the Alliance’s theatre and ended their day with a discussion on the themes addressed in the films.

Hockey: St. Rita wins fifth straight Kennedy Cup

The shouts of “This is our house’’ that came from St. Rita fans when Keith Burchett gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead became a boisterous celebration after the players lived up to the chant.

St. Rita scored three unanswered goals in the second period Monday night, then held on to earn its fifth straight Catholic League Kennedy Cup with a 3-2 victory over Benet at Southwest Ice Arena.

“It’s awesome,’’ Burchett said. “It feels like it keeps getting tougher and tougher every year. Benet played awesome. It was tough. I think it was the toughest one yet.’’

St. Rita won the last two games in the best-of-3 series after falling in overtime to Benet in Game 1.

When time expired Monday, St. Rita goalie Marty Napleton threw his stick and gloves into the air as his teammates rushed to the crease to start the mob scene near the net.

“For two periods we were rolling along,’’ St. Rita coach Craig Ferguson said. “Marty came up big when he had to. He made some big saves at the end.’’

A rebound goal by Jack Warren that put St. Rita ahead 3-0 with 3 minutes, 53 seconds to go in the second period turned out to be the winner. Read Full Story
