Football Team Building Towards a “Team”

Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to achieve uncommon results. This idea has been taken up by Head Football Coach, Todd Kuska and his entire staff.

This past Monday April 29th, the football team piled into a bus and went on a team building event. The location; Top Golf in Wood Dale, Illinois, not exactly a great place to hone your football skills, but the coaching staff said that it wasn’t about football. “These type of thing is not going to help us score touchdowns or block better, “ Kuska stated. “However, it will build the trust and relationships to make this a team and that alone will make us better on the field.

The goal of this event was to give the team a chance to bond with each other, compete against each other, and to take one more step towards their goal of becoming a true team.

For the past 5 years the football team has been choosing team leaders, who then draft their respective team to compete against each other in competitive events throughout the off season.  The teams do not just compete in athletic events; they also compete against each other in academics, attendance at other St. Rita events, and also community service events (St. Baldrick’s Day, Blood Drive etc.).This promotes team building throughout the entire football program and promotes the spirit of Unitas, one of St. Rita’s core values.

Even thought the football season is 4 months away, it is never too early to start. “This is as important as anything we do in the off season,” Kuska said. “The connections we are making and the steps we are taking during these team building activities is something that cannot be learned in the weight room or on the field. That’s why we don’t take it for granted.”

While no one came away from this outing as the next Tiger Woods, the team feels it took steps towards their goals and look forward to the next competition. Up next for the team: the annual bowling competition.

Eight Mustangs Sign National Letters of Intent

Thousands of high school football players around the country are making their decision today on which college or university they will be attending in the fall. That is no different for the students at St. Rita as eight members of the football team signed their national letters of intent this morning to their chosen schools.

Drew Cash (Mokena JHS)   DL – Loras College
Troy Johnson (Wilbur Wright MS)  O/DL – Quincy University
Tommy McCormick (St. Christina)   SS  – St. Joseph’s College
Nick Piraino (Robert Healy MS)   OL – Carthage College
Jack Sears (St. Christina)   OLB – Robert Morris
Jake Spallina (Queen of Martyrs)  OL – Robert Morris
Ben Threloff (Most Holy Redeemer)  OLB – Wisconsin Whitewater
Alex Zaleski (St. Catherine)  OL – St. Xavier

This senior class compiled a record of 30-13 over their four year career, winning numerous playoff games including a run into the semifinals of the state championships in 2011. While losing such a great class of players is hard for Head Coach Todd Kuska, he understands the importance of the players continuing their career. “Every year we have to replace good players and this year is no exception. All these guys are ready to move forward in their careers, but more importantly they have made the St. Rita football program very proud.”

Troy Johnson and Tommy McCormick will have to look across the field at each other next year as they both will be playing for a school in the GLVC conference. Johnson states this was an added bonus in picking Quincy. “Quincy was a great choice for me because I will have the opportunity to make a difference right away. I love the coaching staff and the program is making such great changes, plus I’m really excited that I get to play against Tommy (McCormick) next year.”

With a handful of seniors that still have yet to make their decision, staying close to home may be a factor. In the case of Alex Zaleski, who committed to NAIA powerhouse St. Xavier, being down the street was a welcomed aspect. “St. X is such a good program and they have such a great history of success,” Zaleski said. “Being close to home is important too, because my family has a chance to see me play.”

With the signing completed, Principal Brendan Conroy spoke to the men about their time here and what they meant to the school. He reminded them how proud the school is of them and to always remember the lessons that St. Rita taught them. And just as they were told on their first day of school as freshmen, Principal Conroy finished by stating, “Remember, that we will always be behind you.”

St. Rita’s Darius Fleming Reaches the Super Bowl, A First for the School

ASHBURN — The first St. Rita High School football player to reach the Super Bowl once almost gave up the sport to concentrate on bowling.

Darius Fleming, who’s on the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl XLVII roster despite suffering a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee, originally dreamed of a pro bowling career.

As a St. Rita sophomore, the Auburn Gresham native pondered transferring to nearby Brother Rice, which had a better bowling squad.

“I wasn’t going to let that happen,” said 15th-year football head coach Todd Kuska, a West Lawn native. “I told him you can win an individual state bowling title anywhere, but you can only win a state football championship here.”

Kuska, also a St. Rita grad, was right as Fleming led the Mustangs to the 2006 Class 7A state crown as a junior before a standout career as an outside linebacker at the University of Notre Dame.

The 49ers, who will face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in New Orleans, selected Fleming in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

But Fleming’s season lasted only 15 minutes as he tore his left ACL during his first rookie minicamp.

The 49ers put Fleming, who signed a four-year contract, on the physically unable to perform list for the first eight weeks and moved him to injured reserve for the remainder of this season.

“For some reason, it was meant for me to tear my ACL, as crazy as that sounds,” Fleming, 23, said via cell phone from California on Friday. “I just pretty much accepted it and took it as a wakeup call.”

Athletic director Mike Zunica said St. Rita, one of Chicago’s top football programs, has sent eight players to the NFL, including current St. Louis Rams defensive tackle Matt Conrath.

St. Rita Alum, Mike Kafka signs with the Patriots

The New England Patriots signed quarterback Mike Kafka to a future contract for the 2013 season on Friday.

Kafka, graduated from St. Rita in 2005 and went on to be a standout at Northwestern. From there he was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles where he spent his entire career as the primary backup to Donvan McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick.

Unfortunately Kafka broke his hand before the start of the 2012 season and did not play.

Kafka joins San Francisco 49er and Notre Dame linebacker, Darius Fleming, as well as Matt Conrath (St. Louis Rams) as St. Rita alumni in the NFL.

Nick Goldsmith to be Honored by US Army and NFL Hall of Fame on November 27th

CANTON, Ohio – The U.S. Army and the Pro Football Hall of Fame today announced the ten high school athlete finalists for the U.S. Army – Pro Football Hall of Fame – Award for Excellence.  The program, announced by Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe at the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, highlights the achievements of student-athletes across the country.

The program which was open to all United States sophomore and junior level high school athletes focused on not only athletic achievement, but excellence in academics and community engagement.

“Athletes and Army Strong Soldiers possess a unique and similar set of strengths,” said John Myers, Director of Marketing U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group. “We are excited to partner with the Pro Football Hall of Fame and to recognize these outstanding student-athletes; athletes who excel in their area of sport and who also excel academically. The most important attribute is that they are upstanding members of their communities. We look forward to joining with the ten finalists in San Antonio in January and celebrating their achievements.”

Of the ten finalists for the Award for Excellence is St. Rita junior, Nick Goldsmith. Goldsmith is a three sport athlete starring in football, soccer, and baseball. Nick will be recognized with a formal ceremony on Tuesday, November 27th at 1:30pm in the St. Rita gymnasium. Members of the U.S. Army and Hall of Famer, Richard Dent, will be in attendance to present the award.

Nick’s has been a success story from the moment he walked through the doors at St. Rita High School and has been impressing his coaches ever since. “Nick brings true meaning to the term “student athlete”, stated Head Football coach Todd Kuska. “To be able to balance three varsity sports–two of which occur during the same season along with a heavy class load speaks volumes about Nick’s work ethic and his desire to be the best.”

The two sports that Kuska refers to are football and soccer which both are played in the fall. Nick is the punter and place kicker for the football team and goalie for the soccer team. His soccer coach Bob Kellam, believes he is one of the best players he has ever coached. “Nick’s work ethic is what makes him such an exceptional student athlete,” Kellam stated. “He’s the complete package on and off the field. He’s hands down the best goalie St. Rita has ever seen.”

While Nick has seen his share of successes on the playing field, he has found similar success in the classroom taking honors courses and being ranked near the top of the class. His hardwork in athletics transfers to the classroom as well. “I have been impressed by Nick’s willingness to take responsibilty for his success in the classroom,” stated Matt Wilsey, Nick’s Physics professor. “Nick greatly contributes to a positive learning environment in class by coming prepared, making relevant connections between the material and real life applications, and staying upbeat – even when the material is challenging.

Head Baseball Coach and St. Rita Athletic Director, Mike Zunica, knows the importance of education first and is proud that student-athletes such as Nick get the recognition he deserves. “It is always rewarding to see a great kid get top level recognition for always doing the right thing, being a great teammate, and working hard.

Each of the 10 finalists will travel to the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and participate in various activities. The winner of the Award for Excellence will be announced during the Bowl’s formal Awards Dinner on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013.

“The Pro Football Hall of Fame is proud to continue its mission to educate and promote the excellence that comes with America’s favorite game, football, and combine it with the U.S. Army’s mission of excellence in school, community service and through athletics,” said George Veras, President and CEO, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enterprises. “We are excited to recognize these ten student-athletes for their outstanding achievements and hard work.”

Dawson’s 3 Interceptions lead Mustangs to Victory

Friday night at Doyle Stadium brought warm weather, a great crowd, and the Fenwick Friars to face off against St. Rita in the Prep Bowl quarterfinals. St. Rita was coming off an impressive 31-6 victory against Leo the previous week while Fenwick was still trying to get over their heartbreaking loss to Boylan in the state playoffs. Fenwick held a 7 point lead with under 10 seconds left in that game when Boylan returned a 90 yard punt for a touchdown with no time left. The ensuing 2 point conversion for Boylan was good and Fenwick would lose that game 21-20.

The Friars came out early and looked like they would atone for that loss when Robert Spillane scored on a 19-yard run with 2:05 to play in the first quarter putting Fenwick up 7-0. However, St. Rita would quickly take the game over. The Mustangs scored 21 unanswered points, highlighted by quarterback John Kelley’s two touchdown passes of 15 yards to Julian Crum and a three yard pass to Senior, Tom McCormick. The Mustangs would go into the half up 21-7 and never look back.

The story of the second half was the St. Rita defense, namely Lamar Dawson. Dawson, who had 4 interceptions going into the game, padded his stat column with three more raising his season total to 7 on the year.

“The first one I was just watching the quarterback,” Dawson said. “The second one I just read the quarterback and I was just watching what he was doing, but the last one was a little tougher. It was a little farther back and I had to watch to see where (Cavalieri) was going.”

While the offense looked solid all game, the Mustangs looked to their defense to make key stops and plays all game, something Head Coach Todd Kuska believes they did.

“I think our defense has played well at times and some of the times we’ve failed to get things done, but tonight we did a great job,” St. Rita coach Todd Kuska said. “Lamar had an excellent game and they put good pressure on the quarterback.”

St. Rita would go on to win the game 24-14 setting up the rematch of the year against Brother Rice. The two teams squared off earlier in the season in which Brother Rice won 23-21. The game will be played on Saturday November 17th at Brother Rice at 2:30pm. The winner will move on to the Prep Bowl Championship to play the winner of the public league.

Football, Hockey Win Big Games this Weekend

It took 10 seconds for the St. Rita Mustangs to score their first points Friday night as Freshmen, Danny Gleaves, ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. After that, the Mustangs would be in full control.

After a Leo touchdown, St. Rita would march down the field and cap off a 45 yard drive with a 37 yard field goal by Nick Goldsmith to put the Mustangs up 10-6.The very next possession for Leo would end when Ben Threloff stepped in front of a pass for an interception and returned it to the Leo 10 yard line.

Late in the first half, the Mustangs would see themselves 4th and 1 from the Leo 8. The decision to go for it by Head Coach Todd Kuska was a good one as quarterback, John Kelley, would sneak in for the second St. Rita touchdown extending the lead to 17-6. The next drive for the Mustangs would also result in a touchdown as Tim Lombard would take it in from 2 yards out putting St. Rita up 24-6 going into half.

The Mustangs put on the brakes in the second half with their only score coming off of a Lamar Dawson interception. St. Rita would go on to win 31-6 behind a solid rushing attack and a stellar defensive effort.

The Mustangs will be back in action this Friday at home at 7:00pm, taking on the Fenwick Friars. In September, St. Rita traveled to Fenwick and beat the Friars 38-15.

The St. Rita Hockey team was also in action this weekend coming off a great win against Mt. Carmel on Thursday night. This time it would be the Providence Celtics on the other end of the ice. Different team, same result. The Mustangs would show once again their offense is one of the best in the state outscoring Providence 5-4 on the back of Hunter Marcinek’s hat trick.

With the win the team moves to 7-2 on the year and 3-1 in Chicago Catholic League play. The team will play next on November 8th which is the start of the Prairie State Invite.
