Sell–Out Crowd Packs Gym for St. Rita’s 74th Annual Alumni Banquet

For the third year in a row, over 600 Ritamen, friends, and their guests gathered on campus at St. Rita of Cascia High School for the Annual Alumni Banquet and Class Reunion. This 74th installment was the largest crowd to date, a total of 623 attendees packed the St. Rita Gym to celebrate anniversaries, give recognition to special honorees, and reconnect with old friends.
The Golden Mustang Class of 1960 was 90 men strong. They kicked the night off with a special Mass followed by a private cocktail party in the St. Rita Shrine Chapel and Foyer. Members of the class also joined together and used the night to make a special anniversary donation of $4,000 to the St. Rita High School Student Scholarship Fund.
This year’s banquet had a full and impressive list of special honorees. Three very dedicated men were presented as Honorary Alumnus, they were current St. Rita fathers Gary Gallik and Tom Hopkins, along with the Associate Pastor of St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish and St. Rita supported Fr. Bill McFarlane. Athletic Awards were presented to Tim Dydo ’70, John Egan ’60, John Flanagan ’85, Jack Griffin ’60, Jimmy Johnson ’85, and Jeff Prestinario ’70. Loyalty Awards were given to Ron Abramowicz ’60, Don Allelujka ’70, John Flaherty ’70, Tim McCarthy ’85, and Coach Don L. Russell.
As has become tradition the newest members of the St. Rita Hall of Fame were also inducted during the Alumni Banquet. This year’s inductees were Dan Carroll (Hon.), Stuart Dybek ’59, Richard J. Josepher ’89, Lt. Patrick J. Harrington ’63, David A. Kamm ’54, Dave Moritz ’80, and Andrew Smialek ’08. Rounding off this year’s honors was the naming of the 2010 Man of the Year. This year, proud St. Rita graduate and generous benefactor Donald A. Petkus ’58 was honored for his continue support and dedication to excellence provided in education at St. Rita.
Each honoree was highlighted in a video presentation, created by Director of Graphic Design Javier Solorio II ’02 with the assistance of Director of Public Relations Josh Blaszak ’02 and was narrated by Dean of Men John Nee ’93. The video included a welcome from Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. ’83, President of St. Rita. Each honoree was featured with a personalized slideshow and voice-over biography, and Man of the Year Donald Petkus pre-taped his touching acceptance speech. Thank you to everyone who came home to attend the 74th Annual Alumni Banquet and made it such an enjoyable evening. Any time the St. Rita Family gathers and reconnects the school community grows stronger. Many different eras were represented that night, but each person shared in the timeless tradition that comes with being a member of the St. Rita Family. Your continued dedication and support is greatly appreciated, and you are always welcome at your St. Rita home.
