The 2012-2013 school year has been a “rebirth” year for the St. Rita Theater program, beginning with new directorial leadership and continuing with an expansion of the number of productions performed, the overall size of the group, and the formation of a parent support network. St. Rita Theater Hopes to inspire and provide students with opportunities to express themselves via the performing arts for years to come.

There are currently 30+ members involved in the Theater Program, with new students joining all the time. During the 2012-2013 school year, 4 performances have been scheduled. In November 2012, students performed the first ever “Evening of Improvisation,” a show similar in format to “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” where actors created comedic scenes on the spot based on audience suggestions and loosely formatted games. The show was so popular, that there will be a sequel on March 1st and 2nd, called “An Evening of Improvisation II: The Return of Random Comedy.”

Traditionally, St. Rita Theater has also put on a Variety Show every year consisting of short comedic skits, musical numbers, and improvisation bits, all written and directed by students. This year was no exception, and the Theater Men put on two hilarious nights of comedy in December 2012.

Of course, there is no better way to understand our theater program than by seeing it yourself! Here are the upcoming show dates for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year:

“Tooty’s Corner” is an autobiographical play written by Mike Maione ’56 of the events that happened during a summer in the 1950’s – when he was in high school. The story revolves around Miles (the author) and his friends who frequently gathered at the corner right outside a grocery store owned by a man named “Tooty.” The guys attempt to get rich quick by throwing a softball game against a rival Southside group of friends, and in the process discover a friendship that has lasted a lifetime.
